Cube Storage Standardization Cuts WMS Integration Friction

A warehouse operator committing to AutoStore cube storage faces a decision that extends far beyond choosing hardware. The technical connection between automated cube arrays and warehouse management software determines whether orders flow predictably or stall at the interface layer. Implementation friction in 2026 centers on how much of that connection can be standardized and where operational differences still demand custom configuration logic.


EPG, a provider of warehouse management systems serving B2B distribution and manufacturing logistics, has embedded a standardized AutoStore interface into its EPG ONE WMS platform following customer deployments at AXRO wholesale fulfillment operations and YKK manufacturing sites. The interface addresses a recurring problem: automation projects that deliver proven hardware but fail on the surrounding process alignment, data mappings, and exception handling that determine whether the system integrates with existing workflows or requires expensive rework.


Early projects shaped where flexibility must remain


Jett Chitanand, President of EPG Americas, outlined the technical challenge that emerged from early customer implementations. "The early projects showed that a standard interface alone does not make every AutoStore integration identical. The technical challenge lies in aligning the interface with the customer's existing processes, system architecture, and division of responsibilities between the WMS, AutoStore and other technology providers," Chitanand said in written responses to The Supply Chainer. "Typical issues include mapping order and inventory data correctly between the systems, defining when orders are released to AutoStore, and ensuring that status messages, confirmations, and error codes are interpreted consistently. Replenishment logic, workstation availability, and the handling of exceptions also have to be coordinated with the wider warehouse operation."

The result is an interface architecture that standardizes the core communication protocol while preserving configurability around process rules, data mappings, and surrounding system dependencies. One customer may connect AutoStore directly to the WMS, while another operates through additional control systems or supplier-specific interfaces. According to the 2025 MHI Industry Report, 63 percent of surveyed supply chain operators cited integration complexity as a primary barrier to warehouse automation adoption.


Different sectors use identical technical foundation


AXRO wholesale distribution and YKK integrated manufacturing logistics represent operationally distinct environments, but both implementations use the same core interface for order exchange, inventory synchronization, and status messaging. What changes is how parameters such as order prioritization, workstation allocation, and coordination with manual storage areas are configured within each customer's broader operation. Chitanand confirmed that the standardized approach handles fundamental system communication in both cases, while process logic is tailored to the respective operational environment. This reduces custom development requirements without assuming that two customers with different workflows can deploy identical configurations.


Kevin Xu, VP, Strategic Initiatives at ShipMonk, a Florida-based third-party logistics provider, reinforced the broader pattern around automation modularity and standardization, as previously told to The Supply Chainer. "The universal requirements of automation are scale and standardization. What AI and robotics are really advancing towards is lowering the standardization constraint. We de-risk in two ways: with more modular, less specialized automation, as well as with automation targeted towards product categories that solve unique challenges. This allows us to maximize the benefit of automation - less specialized means more volume - at a lower risk of client mix shift."


Demo environment exposes process readiness gaps


EPG operates a demonstration environment in Germany combining AutoStore hardware with EPG ONE WMS as a training and development platform. The facility serves as a readiness diagnostic, exposing whether customers understand the difference between a standardized technical interface and the process alignment required to make it function within their operations. Chitanand noted a common misconception that a proven interface makes integration entirely plug-and-play. In practice, the technical connection may be proven, but processes around order release, inventory synchronization, exception handling, and coordination with manual areas still require alignment with the customer's system landscape and operational rules.


The demonstration center allows customers to observe how the WMS releases and prioritizes orders, exchanges data with AutoStore, and coordinates automated zones with downstream processes such as packing, shipping, or manual replenishment. This makes project scoping discussions more specific and helps clarify which elements are handled by the standard interface, which decisions must be made during implementation, and where existing customer processes may need adjustment before deployment.
