Fraudulent Pickups Shift Cargo Theft Off the Road

When a driver arrives at a distribution center with forged credentials and a cloned carrier profile, the loading dock becomes the breach point. North American cargo theft rose 27% year-over-year in 2024, with the average loss per incident climbing to $202,364, up from $187,895 the year before, according to Verisk CargoNet. The industry now faces estimated annual losses of $35 billion as criminals abandon physical hijacking in favor of strategic fraud: impersonation, unauthorized double brokering, and digital deception that exploits manual verification workflows the same way a hacker probes for weak passwords.

Strategic Fraud Drives 1,500% Surge Since 2021

Nearly $725 million in cargo was stolen across the United States and Canada in 2025 alone, a 60% increase from 2024, according to FBI and Verisk CargoNet data. Strategic theft involving cyber fraud and identity manipulation to divert freight has surged 1,500% since 2021, according to the American Trucking Associations citing CargoNet data. Munich Re Specialty and BSI Consulting report that 30% of all cargo theft incidents in the US now involve strategic fraud, where criminals never touched a vehicle or forced a lock.

Zero-Trust Architecture Moves From Network to Yard Barrier

Verified access controls only work when unified into an automated Zero-Trust Driver Identity Architecture, where no driver, truck, or credential is trusted by default. In this model, the yard barrier becomes the enforcement point: it will not lift until the system reconciles Transportation Management System dispatch data, driver identity data, and tractor telemetry. Video or photo driver verification, which 52% of fleet professionals call a critical control, authenticates the person. Organized Networks Invest in Fraud Infrastructure

The scale and sophistication of fraudulent pickup schemes indicate that organized criminal networks are treating identity forgery and carrier impersonation as scalable business models.
